A Wallasey school is reported to have been placed on lockdown after a man said to have been wearing a clown mask and armed with knives was seen in the area.

Police confirmed they were called to reports of a man with a covered face and in possession of kitchen knives on Northbrook Road.

Armed police were sent to scene to search the area, and located a 31-year-old man from Birkenhead in an address on Northbrook Road.

He was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and affray and has been taken to a police station to be questioned by detectives.

Somerville Primary School, also on Northbrook Road, was said to have been placed on lockdown, with school officers putting measures in place to ensure the safety of the pupils.

Koreen Reynolds said on the Wallasey Gossip Facebook group that a man in a “clown mask” had a “massive knife” which he waved in her face.

Another onlooker Jade Pritchard described hearing shouting and seeing a man with a mask on “chasing other mums with their kids.”
