A yellow warning of snow and ice has been issued for Merseyside as blizzards and winds threaten to cause chaos on the roads this weekend.
Temperatures are not expected to climb any higher than around 5 degrees today, and a Met Office spokesman said snow could fall in both high and low-ground areas.
Showers are likely to fall as snow or sleet, the spokesman said.
This is particularly likely in the high ground where it could combine with strong winds to create “temporary blizzard conditions” and cause havoc on the roads.
The warning starts at 6pm this evening and continues to 11am on Sunday.
A Met Office spokesman said: “The public are advised to take extra care and be aware of the potential for some disruption to travel.”
